Coyote Canyon Vineyard
2017 tracked right along our long-term average temperatures. It seemed like it was going to be another hot vintage, but the weather mellowed, and we were left with average temperatures. We had some major fires nearby and the smoke cloud ended up moderating some of the hotter weather we were anticipating. After we got started picking in September the weather took a slight cool turn and allowed all our grapes to hang as long as we needed. So far things are tasting great from this vintage.
The Albariño was hand harvested and delivered to the winery where it was whole cluster pressed. We cold settled the juice for a few days then racked the clean juice into a stainless steel tank to start its fermentation. The wine took about 30 days to ferment and was then racked and left to age for a few months prior to bottling. We filtered the wine leaving it looking clean and clear.
I love making Albariño, it is one of my favorite white wines. When I started with Coyote Canyon in 2013 I was looking forward to working with this varietal. It hasn't let me down yet. Over the years we have adjusted our vineyard practices and winemaking a little in order to showcase the fruit aspect of this varietal. It is such a great all around wine. It drinks amazingly well on its own and pairs nicely with anything from shell fish to spicy curry dishes.
Oysters are a perfect match. I would also pair this with Ceviche or a nice spring salad with grilled shrimp.
